Borderline ovarian cancer – or borderline ovarian tumours, BOT – is a confusing diagnosis. It’s quite rare – only around 10% of all ovarian cancers are borderline.
Borderline ovarian cancer is, essentially, grade 0 ovarian cancer.
Typical ovarian cancer is graded 1, 2 or 3 depending on how aggressive it is.
The cells that make up borderline ovarian cancer are not the same as a benign ovarian growth, and they are not the same as typical ovarian cancer.
Borderline ovarian cancer has a low malignant potential which means it is very unlikely to become higher grade (i.e. typical ovarian cancer).
Borderline ovarian cancer is normally treated with surgery alone and prognosis is excellent.
